Women in army a commendable step

Thereport24.com, Dhaka:

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has welcomed the inclusion of women in the country’s armed forces. She also stressed the need for utilizing women’s efforts in the national arena while addressing the concluding parade of the first batch of female personnel.

The government led by Hasina also deserves credit for steps taken to include women in the army and in the air force in the past.

There was a time when the idea of women working outside home was not deemed decent in the society but a significant change in such attitudes has been observed over the years. Women these days work outside in order to live.

The present time thus demands employment opportunities for women and it is the government that needs to supervise the whole affair.

Adequate education and training can make a person suitable for working in any sector. Why should the Bangladeshi women lag behind when those in other countries are moving forward?

Be that as it may, we must not forget our own social values. Certainly, the state and the policymakers are much aware of these.

We also need to be careful enough so that men do not disappear from the workforce because of women employment. This could make men not only inactive but they can also become burdens for the family, the society and the country as a whole.

Besides, such a situation could lead to unwanted consequences as well.
