Nun gang rape: India should take stern action

Thereport24.com, Dhaka:

A nun was gang-raped by a gang of robbers at a school at Ranaghat in Nadia district of India early on last Saturday. Seven to eight robbers broke into the school and stole Tk 12 lakh from an almirah of the office room.

The robbers tied some nuns and security officials up who attempted to resist, and then gang-raped a senior nun. CCTV cameras captured four of the robbers while the nun was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

The school authorities were threatened after they refused to give money to a group of extortionists a couple of days ago. Police were informed of the matter but they disregarded it. There have been claims that the extortionists dared to commit the crime because of police negligence.

The gang rape of the nun caused outrage in many parts of India. This was not an isolated incident as many foreign women were physically assaulted in the country in the past.

This demands that the Indian government looks into the reasons why such crimes are committed. Such incidents invoke hatred among people of different faiths across the globe.

Police have detained a number of people in connection with the gang rape but the four captured on the camera are still at large.

The nun in an act of magnanimity has already forgiven the rapists but we believe officials should nab the criminals and subject them to exemplary punishment to prevent recurrence of such bestial acts.

The gang rape of a nun deserves undivided attention as it is not a usual crime of its kind. We consider it a disgrace for India, even though the country is our closest neighbour.

The Indian authorities should carry out an extensive probe into the incident and take steps accordingly. Otherwise, the country offering scenic beauties could see a decline in global interest in it.
