Let us help disaster-hit Nepal

Thereport24.com, Dhaka:

Nepal, after experiencing a devastating earthquake and a string of aftershocks, is now in a desperate need of relief goods.

The international community ought to reach out to the victims of the disaster and provide them with aid in addition to assisting the Nepalese authorities in the rescue operations.

Apart from medical aid, the Himalayan nation needs food, not to mention rehabilitation measures.

The powerful earthquake has claimed more than 7,000 lives so far while the areas near the epicentre lie in complete ruins.

After losing their abodes as well as near and dear ones, the survivors of the disaster are now leading a miserable life as they have been subjected to untold sufferings.

Different countries and agencies, including the Red Cross, have already sent aid to Nepal as disaster response teams continue with rescue work. Medical teams have also flown to the country from Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has lately ordered officials to send 10,000 tonnes of rice and water to the earthquake victims. Although late, we are happy that the Bangladeshi government has decided to help the Nepalese victims. We hope the government will send more relief materials if situation demands.

The relief goods that Nepal has received so far have been described as inadequate, with the United Nations appealing for $41.50 crore in international aid.

We believe countries and aid agencies across the world should respond to the appeal according to their capability.
