Key share price indices at the country’s twin bourses -- Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) – slumped on Wednesday as some of the large cap shares faced downfall.

The DSE benchmark index, DSEX lost 32.71 points or 0.68 percent to close at 4800.63 on the day. Of the 323 issues traded, 102 gained, 185 declined and 34 remained unchanged.

Shares worth Tk 397.69 crore changed hands at the DSE on Wednesday as against Tk 414.83 crore on Tuesday.

Analyzing the day’s market situation, IDLC Finance said, “Large Caps (-1.4%) absorbed a hit, beating overall market movement during today.”

“Notable stories that contributed market downturn were, fresh audit faced by Grameenphone, which disappointed investors much, cracking 2.8 percent off of its market capitalisation while some other MNC stocks also faced erosion as investors opted for booking profit”, the stockbroker said.

Another leading stockbroker, LankaBangla Securities on its daily market analysis, said “The pullback on the day eroded some of the profits of previous month. The sell off on DSE came as investors were cashing in on yesterday’s gain of banking stocks.”

The merchant bank also said, “Mixed monthly economic data also kept investors watchful, while, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data released yesterday, the inflation in September was 6.24 percent from its lower level of 6.17 percent a month ago due to rise in price of non-food items.”

The day’s top 10 losers at the DSE were Alltex Industries, Progressive Life Insurance, Rahima Food, 7th ICB Mutual Fund, Shahjibazar Power, Reliance Insurance, Aman Feed, Stylecraft, Al-Haj Textile and Apex Foods.

The top five turnover leaders at the DSE were Beximco Pharma, Far Chemicals, Grameenphone, Lafarge Surma Cement and Brac Bank.

Top five gainers at the premier bourse were EBL NRB Mutual Fund, NCCBL Mutual Fund-1, MBL 1st Mutual Fund, DBH First Mutual Fund and AIBL 1st Islamic Mutual Fund.
