MP Liton given first-class inmate privileges

Awami League lawmaker for Gaibandha-1 constituency Manjurul Islam Liton is staying in prison as a first-class prisoner, which comes with a set of privileges.

Md Mahbub Alam, superintendent of Gaibandha district jail, said Liton’s status as a first-class prisoner was set according to the jail code.

On Wednesday, detectives arrested Liton at his sister’s house in the capital city’s Uttara in two cases filed over attempted murder and vandalism charges.

A Gaibandha court sent him to prison the following day.

Jail superintendent Mahbub told thereport24.com Liton had been provided with a bed, a chair and a table in his cell.

“He gets a daily newspaper, eats food prepared in the jail and has got a caregiver. Also, he has undergone a medical check-up and is now fine,” said Mahbub.

Liton’s counsel Advocate Sirajul Islam Babu said a petition seeking the lawmaker’s bail could be filed on Sunday noon.

Early on October 2, Sourav, a fourth-grader, sustained injuries after bullets fired from Liton’s gun hit him in the legs in Gopalcharan area of Sundarganj.

He is now undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital’s child surgery unit.

Sourav’s father filed a case against Liton the following day.

Another case was filed against the member of parliament on October 6 on charges of vandalising and ransacking a house.

Hafizar Rahman, a resident of Sahabaj village in Sarbananda union, lodged the vandalism case.
