Fresh fire at Sundarbans, probe body formed

The Forest Department authorities have formed a three-member probe committee after a planned fresh fire broke out in west side area of Nanagli Camp of Dhansagor Station under Chnadpai Range of Sundarbans on Wednesday afternoon.

Three firefighting units from Bagerhat, Morelganj and Sarankhola have been working on to douse the blaze, which erupted around 05:00pm.

Belayet Hossain, Assistant Conservator of Forests in Chandpai Rang, confirmed the fire.

In speaking of the cause of the fire, Md Zahir Uddin, Conservator of Forests (Khulna rang), told thereport24.com a local smuggling gang has been carrying out these sabotages in a planned way to destroy the forest land in Sundarbns.

Suing 11 local smugglers previously instigated them to do today’s fire, the conservator said.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee headed by Chandpai Rang AFC Belayet Hossain was formed to investigate the fire incident.

The committee has been asked to submit its report in next business days, Uddin said.

With the latest fire, the world’s largest mangrove forest has caught fire for four times in 2016 so far.

Over 13 acres of forest land turned into ashes after fire caught Sundarbans on April 18, April 13 and March 28 this year.

According to the authorities concerned, these incidents were pre-planned that led to file two lawsuits by the Forest Department against 11 people.

Prior to this, fire also gutted five and two acres of forest land in 2014 and 2011 respectively.
