Shibir leader killed in Jhenaidah ‘gunfight’

A Chhatra Shibir leader was killed in a gun battle with police in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila’s Aruakandi early on Tuesday.

Saiful Islam, 25, hailed from Shailkupa.

The incident took place at around 03:00am.

Police said they recovered a firearm, five bombs and three sharp weapons from the scene.

Harendranath Sarker, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, said Shibir members hurled handmade bombs at a patrol police team in Aruakandi on Jhenaidah-Magura road.

“The shootout ensued when police fired back. Both groups exchanged fires for around 20 minutes. Saiful was found dead when his accomplices fled.

“Two police officials were injured in the gunfight too,” he said.

Saiful’s body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police said he had been named in several subversion cases.
