Athens for boosting economic ties with Dhaka

Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece Dimitrios Paraskevopoulous today expressed his country's eagerness to enhance economic collaboration in agriculture, infrastructure and shipping sectors of Bangladesh.

The Greek Secretary General (Foreign Secretary) showed the interest during the 2nd Political Consultations between Bangladesh and Greece held at the State Guest House Meghna here, according to a foreign ministry press statement issued on Monday afternoon.

Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque and Ambassador Dimitrios Paraskevopoulous led their respective sides during the consultations held six years after the First Political Consultation held in Athens in April 2010.

During the meeting, they discussed the whole range of bilateral relations including exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual interests when the both sides agreed to work together to deepen and widen areas of cooperation between the two countries.

At the outset of the meeting, Shahidul Haque informed his Greek counterpart of the sustained economic growth and invited Greek businesses to seize the opportunity to explore investment potentials in Bangladesh, a growing hub of economic activities in the region.

He also requested the Greek side to consider increasing import of Bangladeshi goods for enhancing bilateral trade and business.

The two sides also exchanged views on how to make attestation of documents easier for Bangladeshi expatriates living in Greece and agreed to work together to organize high level visits in the near future.

The foreign secretary briefed his Greek counterpart about the preparation for the 9th Global Forum for Migration and Development (GFMD) to be held in Dhaka in December 2016 when the Greek Secretary General agreed to send a high level delegation to participate in the GFMD in Dhaka.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Greece Md. Jashim Uddin and Greek Ambassador to Bangladesh Panos Kalogeropoulos, among others, were present during the meeting.

Besides, the Greek Secretary General called on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, at his office this morning.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on ways and means to further strengthen and consolidate ties between the two countries, particularly to enhance trade and investment.

Expressing his satisfaction at the 2nd Political Consultations between the two countries, Shahriar Alam encouraged the Secretary General to open a Greek embassy in Dhaka at the earliest to facilitate enhanced people-to-people contact and boosting bilateral ties in economic, cultural, educational and related spheres.

The Greek Foreign Secretary also paid a visit to the Language Martyrs Monument and one Greek installation inside the Dhaka University.
