SC fixes May 14 for hearing on review pleas of govt, Sayedee

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday fixed May 14 to hear the review petitions, filed by the government and convicted war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee, against its verdict in the war crimes case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date in the afternoon.

Earlier on April 3, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam ‍said, “Today the matter came on the Appellate Division cause list. I am hoping the apex court on April 6 will hear the two review petitions, one filed by Sayedee and another filed by the state.”

On February 28, 2013, The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 sentenced Sayedee to death as it found him guilty of committing crimes against humanity.

On March 28, 2013, He filed an appeal against the tribunal judgement. The Appellate Division on September 17, 2014, commuted his death sentence to imprisonment till his natural death.

The state on January 12, 2016, filed the petition to review the apex court judgment, pleading to increase his sentence of imprisonment till death to maximum punishment.

On January 17, 2016, Sayedee also filed his review plea, seeking acquittal from the charges of crimes against humanity.
